Dunewood
Dunewood is a small beach community in the western end of Fire Island, between Fair Harbor and Lonelyville. With about 100 homes originally all build on an identical floor plan, some old-time residents would frequently refer to Dunewood as “Levittown on the bay.” While the community specifically does not market itself to tourists and short-term renters, it is a popular location for long-term residents, and properties are rarely for sale. The town has only very limited facilities, and while during summertime. Dunewood residents use the ferry to Bay Shore from Dunewood, or from nearby Fair Harbor.
Dunewood, like many neighboring communities, suffers from coastal erosion, which the community in the early 2000s was attempting to control via beach replenishment, the sand replacement funded by taxes levied through each community’s erosion control district. Some houses on the ocean in Dunewood have exposed beams and jut out into the beach.
Dunewood has a yacht club, the Dunewood Yacht Club. Sailing lessons are available to all. Dunewood is also one of the few communities that has a beach on the bay. Dunewood also boasts two tennis courts, only available to Dunewood residents.
